Heartbeat Bill Needs your Help!

Mother and Child lost in Abortion

This morning I emailed out several of my contacts on the work we are doing in Topeka with the Heartbeat Bill.  I have posted it here for circulation.  Please share this!

Hello Friends-

Thank you for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support for our day in Topeka yesterday introducing the Heartbeat Bill to the committee. We have a battle on our hands that needs your help. I will address the ways in which you can help and then summarize yesterday’s presentation.

First: Pray that the Pro-Life camps can unite. There is a division in Topeka (and elsewhere) about this piece of legislation. Some say they will not support the bill because it protects unborn children from the time of heartbeat (not conception.) Although I fully agree that life begins at conception, this way of thinking is dangerous.

If you were witness to a mass drowning and had limited number of life preservers to throw out…

would you withhold the preservers because you do not have enough to save them all?

NO! You would save as many as you could as quickly as possible!

This Heartbeat Legislation has been written to save 85% of babies being aborted today

and is aimed at the heart of Roe vs Wade.

Second: Contact your Senators and Representatives by email, phone, or in person. From what I learned yesterday the in-person visit is the most effective. Right now the session is almost over and our elected are very busy on the floor voting- but showing up at their office and seeing if you can catch them by chance (or leaving a message with their secretary) is very effective. I wish you could see the lobbyists that are there on a daily basis. We need to become our own lobbyists! Just remember to always use facts and be professional.

Third: Contact Kansans for Life. This large Pro-Life group has their hearts in the right place to save all the babies. But with their stance to oppose the Heartbeat Bill we have one major player who will not support the bill because of the view of this group. **Please remember to speak with the highest level of respect to them. This can be a very touchy subject!!** Contact: David 316-687-5433 and Mary Kay 913-406-4446

Fourth: Continue to pray. We have had 40 years of abortion on demand in this country. We need to stop this in any and all ways possible. Pray specifically that we do not become too political in our own Pro-Lifer camp to get anything done.

Fifth: Use this email sign up form for Pro-Life updates in Kansas and across the nation. I need a fast and immediate way to contact the warriors across the state and be assured that messages are delivered. Signing up for this list will be exclusive updates on Pro-Life work.  http://eepurl.com/xkayH

 Summary of Yesterday’s Presentation:

Although I did not make it to the microphone to testify in front of the group due to time constraints those that did present were very well spoken and highly effective. Written testimony was also submitted in record amounts (thank you to those that took the time to do so!)

Those that spoke for the bill were:

  •  Representative Pete DeGraaf- Heartbeat legislation sponsor, Kansas
  • Representative Ed Bideau- Heatbeat co-sponsor, Kansas
  • Walter Weber- Attorney at Law, Washington DC
  • *Dr. David Forte- Constitutional Law Professor, Ohio
  • Troy Newman- President Operation Rescue, Kansas
  • Janet Porter- Faith2Action President, Ohio

And two women spoke against the bill. I was literally heartbroken when I listened to their reasons to oppose this bill. Reasons such as: Women may not have enough time to realize that they are pregnant before the heartbeat and such legislation would not allow them enough time to schedule the abortion, come up with funds, etc. And that they vaginal ultrasound device would be mandatory and ‘invasive’… (never mind the fact that the abortion itself is invasive!)

After the committee presentation was concluded we worked our way around the Capitol speaking with Representatives and Senators about the bill and passing out Heartbeat Pins as well as stickers. I got to see first hand how working as a “lobbyist” operates. I highly recommend that anyone who has the time to do so go to Topeka and experience this as well! Not only is it a fantastic learning opportunity it helps the cause.

Upon leaving Topeka I found out that the committee immediately took the Bill out of there hands and sent it to the floor for today (Wednesday 3-26-13). Please continue to pray that our Senators and Representatives will stand up and support this bill.

Thankfully,

Janalin Hood

*Financial Request: As many of you know Ed and Margaret Bideau covered the $990 to get attorney David Forte here last minute. And while the Bideau’s personally pledged to cover $400 of that amount we are still short $190. Dr. Forte has been a legal adviser to the Vatican in the past and is highly respected. I contacted the Kansas Catholic Conference of Bishops to request financial help, but have not heard back. Would one of you be willing to follow up or donate the money?

The Heartbeat Bill {Kansas Pro-Life Advocate}

Heartbeat Bill- URGENT help is needed!

Dear friends,

I am working on Pro-Life Legislation that needs your IMMEDIATE help. In fact we are working on such a tight deadline that I need you to read this and make your responses before Monday, March 25th at 11am.

I have been asked to testify before committee in Topeka this Tuesday March 26th along with four others on the Heartbeat Bill. Representative Ed Bideau (Chanute) is a co-sponsor to this bill that is making strides to drastically reduce abortion in Kansas.

The Heartbeat Bill has been crafted nationally by the best attorneys and written to present at the Supreme Court Level. To summarize- this bill would put restriction on abortion after a heartbeat can be detected, which is 8-10 weeks gestation, or abortion providers would face strong legal ramifications. This would save 85% of babies being aborted today!! Please read all the details if you would like at http://www.heartbeatbill.com The attorneys that have written this legislation have crafted it to ultimately pass at the Supreme Court level. Right now we have four pro-life Supreme Court Justices and four pro-choice Justices. “This bill has been designed specifically to satisfy the stated desires of US Supreme Court Justice Kennedy” whom would be the swing vote on such matter. Kansas has been selected as the state in which to introduce the bill as we have a pro-life House, Senate, and Governor, thus the best chance of getting the bill to the Supreme Court.

The five of us that are speaking on Tuesday need prayers. Please pray that we speak profoundly… in a way that opens the eyes to those who may disagree with us. Pray that God directs our words and we speak His words. Pray that this legislation is for the good of our nation and is His will. We also need written testimonies to go along with our presentation.

There are two ways you can make your voice heard, but it must be done immediately.

Option #1 Send Email to Committee Members

Send an email to each of the Representatives on the committee. I have included a sample letter, and some suggestions on how to craft it. I would encourage you not to simply retype this letter, but personalize it in any way you can. Many times they receive many “form” letters that are exactly the same, with only different signatures. That is not very effective. Your email does not have to be long, in fact brief is better, but anything you can put in that personalizes it makes a much stronger statement.

At the end of this email there is a list of each committee member’s email address. You simply need to address your letter to the Chair of the committee, and the members. You only need to compose one letter and (carbon copy) send it to every member.

Here is a sample draft for suggested letter:

RE: HB 2324 – Pro-Life Heartbeat Protection Bill

Dear Representative _____________:

I am (put some information in as to who you are, where you live and what you do. If you are in the Representative’s district, please indicate that) Thank you very much for your dedication to our state and your service in the Kansas House of Representatives.

I am a very strong Pro Life advocate and I am very interested in the Pro-Life Heartbeat Protection Bill

that will come before the House Federal and State Affairs Committee for a hearing. This Bill would prohibit abortion after a detectable heartbeat of the unborn child is present and would end roughly 85% of the abortions occurring in Kansas. It has been drafted by attorneys with legal experience in the appellate courts, including a staff attorney with the American Center for Law and Justice. We feel that it has the best chance of meeting a legal challenge, particularly in the U.S. Supreme Court.

If a doctor can detect a heartbeat then the baby should be protected. Please support HB 2324 in committee and please send the Pro Life Heartbeat Protection Bill on to the full House for action

Sincerely,

Option #2 Submit Written Testimony to Committee

The next thing you can do that is even more powerful, and very simple to do, is submit written testimony to the committee and have it become a part of the official committee record. Testimony submitted will be placed on the committee desk of every member the day the bill is heard.

To submit written testimony you must get it sent to the committee secretary the day before the hearing, MONDAY, by 11:00, and ask to have it considered as testimony to the committee.

WRITTEN TESTIMONY IN SUPPORT OF HOUSE BILL 2324 – PRO-LIFE HEARTBEAT PROTECTION BILL

Chairman Arlen Siegfreid and Committee Members

House Federal and State Affairs Committee

Kansas House of Representatives

RE: HB 2324 – Pro-Life Heartbeat Protection Bill

Hon. Chair and Committee Members

I am (put some information in as to who you are, where you live and what you do. I am unable to appear in person before the committee today for the hearing on HB 2324 but I would like to submit my written testimony in support of the bill for consideration by the committee.

I am a very strong Pro Life advocate and I am very interested in this bill.

The people of Kansas strongly support heartbeat legislation and in a recent poll a majority of Kansans agree that if a doctor can detect a heartbeat then the baby should be protected. I feel very strongly that when a heartbeat is detected that is clear evidence of a human life and we must act to protect it. This is the right issue, the right time and it is our duty to save these children now.

Please support HB 2324 and please send the Pro Life Heartbeat Protection Bill on to the full House for action.

Sincerely,

Making the Faith Real for our Children

Making the Faith Real for our Children

(source)

When I stand and face the Lord I hope to hear him say, “well done good and faithful servant.” Knowing that I am so very far from perfection I pray daily that this day can be used for His will in my life.  I believe our biggest calling as parents is passing the faith to our children.   Have you considered how you are making the faith real to the next generation?  Why is it that so many children are becoming luke warm or leaving the faith?  Parents- it is our calling to raise up these children to be warriors for Christ!

Here are some ways to make the faith come alive for children.

1- Worship weekly at church. Children need to see us getting dressed up… seeing that this time is the most important time that we give in our week.

2- Pray out loud as a family. Sharing memorized prayers helps young minds grasp and follow along. Praying from our hearts helps older children know how to talk to God and introduces them to their relationship with him.  Be sure and pray several times a day as well as a family!

3- Read the Bible together!  There are so many fantastic children’s Bibles available… be sure and read a story each night before bed.  And let your children ‘catch’ you reading your Bible too.

4- Make Christ visual in our homes.  We need pictures hung and verses in the wall.  These things may seem easy to skip over, but children notice.  Subliminal messages are sometimes the strongest ones.

5- Parent with gentleness.  Treat every child as Jesus would.  This means calming our own frustrations when we are at whits end and quietly asking for His guidance.  It means smiling at children we don’t know and always welcoming our children’s friends into our home with love and grace.

6- Sing his praises. Do your children know simple bible school songs? Sing them in the morning during your getting ready routine.  Play contemporary Christian music in your car.  And introduce Christian entertainment instead of the regular cartoons they watch.

7- Teach reverence and sacredness of tradition.  So many young adults decide that picking and choosing what to follow of their faith.  We need to set the example that God’s law IS THE LAW and that we cannot pick and choose what to follow.  (Do your children know the Ten Commandments?)

8- Disciple to others.  Sharing our faith is the core discipleship.  We all have different paths in life and we need to share our Light with all whom we meet.  Our actions, words, and reactions are all being observed (and sometimes analyzed!) by others.  Be sure that our daily interactions with our husbands, children, extended family, friends and co-workers are those that would exude His example.

Easter Preparations:  Right now we are preparing for the most sacred time of year in this season of Lent.  Use this time to bring reverence for the sacrifice that He made for us.  Here are a few ideas to bring Christ and His love to your child’s heart during this season:

Resurrection eggs

Stations of the cross (at your local Catholic church.  I HIGHLY recommend going to the children’s version no matter what your denomination.  This is a must do!)

Rice bowls

Fasting: This can be abstaining from sweets, quitting bad habits, or also shown in the way of adding something that you don’t normally do to your day (

Are Pallets Safe?

Are Pallets Safe?

(source)

I think I see a new pallet project on Pinterest daily.  And although I have to admit that they look great for rustic applications I continually panic at the thought of the chemicals that most are treated with when they are made and throughout use.  As a self- proclaimed hippie mama I am shocked how many people are flocking to this trend without thinking about the implications of living with said chemical.  (Yes, I am one of those mamas that shops for pajamas that contain no flame retardant.  Among other things!)   There is no way I would risk bringing in a toxic chemical such as the ones that treat pallets for insect infestation into my home.

With some internet research done it is evident that there is a large group of people that are not concerned with the risk of decorating/ building with pallets.  Here is an article that explains how some pallets are made for one time use (and no chemicals are sprayed) versus the ones that are used time and time again.   This is good that some companies are realizing the risks involved… BUT my gut tells me that the ‘beautiful’ weathered gray pallets are the ones that are chemically treated.  How else would they still be around after spending so much time outside getting that gorgeous patina?  So for now… I will lay my anti-pallet decor soap box to rest.  Decorate safely friends!  xo

Circumcision Care for Newborn Boys

circumcision care

When we were at the hospital shortly following the birth of our son they came in to take him for his circumcision. I balked. Emotions were high as I was holding him and I just couldn’t fathom doing something so horrible.  Granted, I had the previous nine months to have researched this, but in that moment… I knew I did not want to send our precious  boy away to do anything that would cause him pain.  In the end, the procedure was done and I had to rely on my calm, level-headed husband’s guidance.

The hospital told us the care guidelines for the circumcision. We were to leave the p*nis alone for the first several days and apply vaseline so the diaper would not stick to the area. Easy enough. We did that and seemed to be healing up fine.  But as several healthy-baby pediatric visits went by I was troubled at the fact that the doctor had to loosen (or un-attach) the for*skin each time.  And each time it would seem to be worse and more painful to do.  When our son was 15 months old our family doctor said that we were likely candidates for a second circumcision since we couldn’t seem to get the area to heal without re-attaching.  I. WAS. DEVASTATED.

I asked the doctor what I could do so that I might possibly be able to avoid the second procedure.  He recommended bringing the p*nis fully out of the sheath and cleaning it once a day and then applying vaseline at the bottom of the head.  I decided to follow those directions but to also add two more times per day when I brought the p*nis completely out.  So during a regular day I would clean it three times and apply vaseline once.  This simple change in how I was caring for our son has made the difference.  He has healed 100% and we have avoided the second circumcision.

THE BOTTOM LINE:  To heal a circumcision, we  have to  clean the p*nis by bringing it completely out of the for*skin daily (or more as needed) and applying vaseline until completely healed.

My hope is that all of you new moms- and moms to be can read this and see how SIMPLE caring for your son can be.  If only I had proper instructions from the start (where is that baby handbook anyway!) all of the painful appointments for our son could have been avoided.

What about baby care have you learned that no one told you?

Why I quit facebook.

Why I quit facebook

Do you ever have one of those days when you know you have to make a significant change? And you are on fire to get it done? Getting rid of my personal facebook page has been on my mind for a while now. Why? Facebook is fake. Most ‘friendships’ online are fake. Have you ever ran into a facebook friend in public and they won’t speak? Awkward. And it’s happened to me more than once.

But the fake part of facebook isn’t the only reason I un-friended 800+ people. My three main reasons:

1) You become the five people whom you spend the most of your time with.  Other than children, my internet people are the people that I spend the majority of my days with. Our human nature is to sin and facebook naturally is full of photos and status updates documenting it all. Pursuing God’s hand in my life will allow me more time to read real books, get outdoors, spend my time intentionally.

2) I thought about how my husband feels with me being ‘friends’ with so many men.  I have to admit, at first when I read this post  on Women Living Well I thought it was drastic.   But… the internet is all about perceptions.  What if one of my friends saw more into a friendship than I did? Marriage in our culture is harder than it ever has been and I want to safe guard mine in every way that I can.

3) And then this quote hit me like a ton of bricks. Time is life. These are the days of my life. What is essential?  I don’t know about you, but I want to live, laugh, taste, and feel this life. For. Real.

(source)

No, I am not advocating that all of you go to the extreme I have.  It was what I needed to do.  But if you feel compelled to edit down your friends list for any reason listed above… GO DO IT!  Freedom awaits.  ;)

And for those of you that know me in ‘real’ life… lets do lunch or a play date in the park.  I want to see YOU in person, give you a hug and catch up.  XO

The Choose Love Project

Photo of newborn baby's hand

The Choose Love Project is a celebration of Janalin’s calling as a Christian, a mother, and a photographer. Over the years that she had been a portrait photographer she found herself called to specifically make images of babies, children, and their families. Not until recently did she fully understand where this path was leading her.

Janalin has chosen to start her journey with the Choose Love Project for the non-profit group One Sonogram. One Sonogram donates money to clinics so that women considering abortion may have an ultrasound free of charge. Studies show that nearly 90% of women that have a sonogram choose to save the life of their child. Sonograms make a difference!

Share the love by donating to the Choose Love project.  Your donation of $5 goes directly to the support of producing the images that are sent to the not for profit Pro-Life organizations.

About

Janalin Hood

Seeing that little face for the first time, his first cry, holding him in my arms… yes, I had witnessed it all before during the birth of our daughter. But this time it was amplified. It was as if I were watching in slow motion. I knew deep inside how fleeting this moment was. Realizing how in a few short years that this moment would be hard to remember. It sobered me, brought me to tears, and sent me into a whirlwind of emotion. Suddenly it was as if I didn’t have a single care about any professional work I had ever done or could ever do. Being a mother was clearly the single most important job in my life.

I still had to find myself. My mission. Yes, I was passionate I was about mothering. But finding my place in the big picture. For His glory, not mine. A lot of soul searching and many long nights in heartfelt prayer have very clearly led me here. This blog is about love. Loving one another and loving LIFE.
